從問題提煉出風格
每個年代都有自己需要面對的問題,換句話說也會因為這些不同而造就自己的文化風格。回首看看過往我們所經歷的,總有一些跨越了多個時代的作品,在各各不同的時間點上以當代的形式再次呈現在人們面前。

在我自己的樂團好客樂隊中,傳統國樂如何在保有特質的狀況下呈現出新的風貌,現代樂器如何扮演一個平衡的媒介是相當重要的。傳統與現代器樂本身的特性在彼此相互模仿演奏法之下,往往變成原本領域中的四不像。常聽到演奏國樂的老先生們說我們的胡琴手蕭詩偉演奏的不是國樂,也常有年輕人說我們根本不是搖滾,但卻也因為如此創造了獨一無二難以模仿的音樂特質。
如何延長作品的效應

閱讀是有年紀的。並不是說有哪些閱讀需要發生在哪個年齡比較好,而是閱讀本身會留下年齡的標籤。五歲時的小叮噹跟三十五歲時的哆啦A夢在我身上留下了不同的痕跡 。

長大後自己身為一個對社會無直接貢獻的創作人,當我在執行各樣計畫時,總是會隱約想起小時候閱讀時的感覺,執著於如何讓作品能有綿延的長尾效應,或是延續生命中自以為的美好價值。
土地廟前野台開演
幾年來隨著好客樂隊走唱,無論是地方上重要的媽祖廟,或是田埂邊小到會被忽略的三山國王,對好客來說是演出與活動主要的地點。但是,在這個場域中要導入現代戲劇,著實難翻出一個標準的想像,光是舞台旁邊釣蝦場燈的亮度和「董ㄘ董ㄘ」的音樂聲就讓我打了好幾個問號。
野台演出需要一種強度,強到將周邊影響排擠在外的程度。試看我們台灣在地的野台文化,哪個不是生猛有力?廟宇在地方上的意義與功能往往超乎我們的想像,無論是以往或是現代,廟宇的文化活動力總是緊咬著時代脈動。說它保持文化遺產也好,或是文化再造也好,至少在我的印象中廟宇這方面的強度一直都維持在一個濃度裡。
就因為如此,當一個非廟宇系統的演出要進駐其中時,所需面對的環節與抗力是複雜萬分,就連音樂統籌的工作都需要做好功課。南北管是閩粵一帶生活中的重要音樂類型,而北管生猛的性格在野台文化中不斷轉型,如演化一般,上了街頭就加上擴音器,有了獅陣就加入粵派獅鼓,多了經文團就編寫齊唱分部,甚至到最近我還看過辣妹拉丁鼓,萬千繽紛目不暇給。在北管身上看見將外力化為內力的多元包容,凶悍的創新嘗試,這已經扎扎實實是台灣的在地文化,全世界只有我們有。
傳統與現代的融合
因此傳統與現代的融合便勢在必行。在音樂風格多元的獨立樂壇中,多年來大家所熟知的音樂人林強,從出道以來每個時期始總是有能力牽引著當代大眾音樂的走向:無論是最早的《向前走》,還是中期多元的《娛樂世界》,一直到目前電子化的《驚蟄》。近期的音樂大多具有強烈的畫面感,雖然形式上隨著時代演變,但強烈的敘事核心始終不曾動搖,扎扎實實地傳遞著他的佛學態度與人文關懷。
也曾在「地下社會」看過年輕世代的高科技電子樂團「不熟的朋友派對」表演,主打派對電音,但這麼說其實刻意縮小了他們多元的音樂內容。在消費性電子舞曲的世界中,大部分都是DJ加一台trun table就搞定一切,真槍實彈器樂上場的少之又少。「不熟的朋友派對」踏著器樂能力的起點出發,集中火力在舞曲的環節中,這種以專題為主軸的音樂十分值得關注。
好客樂隊的鼓手鍾成達以及歌手陳綺貞的專輯製作人鍾成虎,這兩個兄弟都對台灣音樂貢獻非凡。達哥從早期的觀子音樂坑、交工樂隊,一路到現在的「好客樂隊」,除了在音樂上的創作以外,台灣音樂的文化史上應該也要留下他的大名。他投入很多的心血在客家八音鼓的設計與演化,無論是軟體或硬體。集合東西方的「達鼓」已經發展到第七代了,原本要五、六個人演奏的東方八音鼓,加上一個人演奏的西方爵士鼓,在達哥近二十年的設計中演變成一個人就可以搞定的東西合併版。當我們巡演至法國時,甚至有博物館想館藏,可見其價值。
也有劇場出身的歌手王榆鈞,總是背著一把吉他從南到北,吟遊大小鄉鎮。雖然不懂五線譜,但喜愛文字的她將強烈的敘事風格融入音樂中,帶有一絲民謠風的溫柔,將生活中細緻的觀察表現無遺。
從傳統到新世代,多元的音樂樣貌融合在當代的視聽世界裡。同時透過快速的網路傳播,隨時可以在網路上觀賞世界各地的音樂,而這些元素又不斷的繁殖變形。要如何整合不同風格的音樂,並且透過這樣的聲音說出屬於世代的語言,進而與戲劇、文字對話,這也是我們的時代責任,我們必須留下痕跡。
